In some cases, this document will tell the reader where to find information. When possible, this document will only point to an address, another document, FAQ or list member expert - that may have the needed information. This reduces duplicated work; and it increases the chances of finding the most current, reliable information.
This FAQ is purely a volunteer effort. Although every effort has been made to insure that answers are as accurate as possible, no guarantee is implied or intended. The editor and contributors have developed this FAQ as a service to the subscribers. We hope you find it useful.
There aren't many rules on the Coins List, but there are some. I'm open to change if the list members feel some policy is inappropriate.
The address for the Coins list is COINS@UNI.EDU. Coins list is a discussion group on the internet. Members can post news, questions, commentary, etc. (see posting guidelines). This group's purpose is to inform people about numismatics and collecting, serve as a forum for discussion of numismatic topics (broadly defined), to enable people to find others with the same collecting/hobby interests, and to in a limited way facilitate trades and exchanges of collectable items.
The Coins list was established in Fall 1992 by Robert Holder. Daniel Power became Coins List Manager in May 1993. See Origins of COINS at http://dssresources.com/coins/coins-list-origin.html
New members can become "public" members of C.O.I.N.S. by sending their full name, address, a short biographical sketch and information about their numismatic collecting, writing, etc. interests to daniel.power@uni.edu

Original submissions, and works either released into the public domain, or copyrighted but without restriction of distribution, are welcome.
If possible put the topic in all caps in the subject line: "SHOW REPORT", "BARBER DIMES", "TRADING NOTICE", "ANCIENTS".... If this procedure was followed by most posters, those new to the group would notice it and automatically tend to use it without even reading the FAQ.
Posts are generally of the following types:
- Discussions on topics of general interest, i.e. grading. Discussions on specific numismatic topics, i.e. tokens, techniques, i.e. cleaning, or coins, i.e. English Half pennies are also frequent.
- Announcements of upcoming coin shows, ANA coin programs or other events.
- Reports or comments on new books, trade press articles, etc.
- Brief trade notices for coins and related numismatic items and
materials. We have no objection to posting a message "TRADING NOTICE:
DO NOT POST Commercial advertisements, buy/sell price lists, political lobbying
messages, and/or anything not pertaining to the Coins list. Discussions about
some commercial products, especially numismatics books and software, are
generally allowed as long as they do not constitute "hidden" advertisements and
biased endorsements.
- Before posting a message for the first time, read the discussions for
a week or so.
- Always include your full name and e-mail address. Put this
information at the end of your message, with your usual signature..
- Send private replies whenever appropriate. Answers to very esoteric
questions are often best sent directly to the person who asked for help, rather
than to the Coins list; the choice of whether to post a (public) reply or send
(private) e-mail is a personal decision. If you send a reply by e-mail, and
would prefer that it be kept private, you should say so in your note, because
otherwise the other person may share your comments with others. If the
original poster promises to post a summary at the outset, then all replies
should be sent by e-mail, unless they constitute an important re-direction of
the original question.
- Summarize the replies to a question for the entire list when that is
appropriate. Whenever a question or request for information results in many
replies, it is expected that the person who made the original request will
compile and post a summary of the responses.
- Use care when writing summaries. Organize the responses. All
answers should be separated clearly, and nicely formatted. Redundant,
irrelevant or verbose comments, and errors of fact or spelling should be edited
out. It is appropriate to use square brackets and dots to indicate editing
[...]. Exercise discretion and tact, to ensure a fair and accurate summary.
Unless they asked that their names be withheld, the contributors of each answer
should be named and thanked, individually or as a group.
- Avoid starting nasty arguments or "flame wars". Be generous when
interpreting the statements and arguments of others. "If you're going to
flame someone, please do so privately. Your mailer can "reply" to a message
either just to the person who wrote it or to the whole list as well. Please,
everybody, when replying to a message on the list, check whether your reply is
going to the whole list. If your reply is meant just for the author
(as most are) don't send it to the rest of us" [John Sullivan].
- Watch copyrights. If the material is copyrighted let us know.
- Watch the libel laws. People read and may quote what you post to the
Coins list.
