StorageTek advances information lifecycle management for high performance computing
LOUISVILLE, Colo., and SC2004, Nov. 8, 2004 -- High performance computing (HPC) environments require high performance data storage solutions. With so much critical data to store and protect, it's no wonder that today's supercomputing centers look to StorageTek.
StorageTek(R) (Storage Technology Corporation) (NYSE: STK), the leading provider of enterprise information lifecycle management, is on hand at SC2004 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this week to demonstrate advanced data storage and protection solutions and strategies designed to enhance data management agility and efficiency in data intensive computing environments. At the event, StorageTek will show the latest entries in its advanced solution portfolio and contribute equipment and expertise as part of the event's StorCloud high bandwidth storage area network (SAN) initiative.
"Our enterprise tape and disk storage solutions are fixtures in many of the world's most sophisticated supercomputing centers, including Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC)," said RB Hooks, StorageTek chief technology officer, public sector. "For StorageTek, SC2004 represents a tremendous opportunity to help educate the supercomputing community on our information lifecycle management strategy and the next-generation storage technologies that will enable them to effectively store and manage terabytes to petabytes of critical data into the future."
Among the activities planned for SC2004:
* StorageTek is contributing equipment and expertise as part of SC2004's StorCloud high bandwidth SAN initiative. StorCloud, a new conference program this year, leverages advanced storage capabilities to showcase high performance computing storage technologies (topologies, devices, interconnects). StorCloud's "storage on request" area network capability, comprised of state-of-the-art heterogeneous devices and technology, supports researchers and demonstrates storage intensive applications. As part of this initiative, StorageTek has contributed 13 FlexLine(TM) FLX280 disk storage systems to Sandia National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the San Diego Supercomputing Center for use as part of their respective entries in the StorCloud competition. StorCloud is located in booth #1542. For more information on StorCloud, visit http://www.sc-conference.org/sc2004/storcloud.html.
* StorageTek will host live demonstrations of its high-end StreamLine(TM) SL8500 modular tape library system, midrange StreamLine SL500 system, and Global Storage Manager(TM) (GSM) enterprise storage resource management software. When using StorageTek's StreamLine series tape libraries in tandem with GSM, customers can get a centralized, comprehensive view into their entire backup infrastructure, from backup applications to networking and tape automation components. Customers can visualize and manage multi-vendor, multi-site storage environments from a central location.
"StorageTek's contribution of its high performance FlexLine FLX280 disk storage systems to our Massively Parallel Quantum Chemistry (MPQC) entry in this year's StorCloud program will enable us to maximize the performance and raw capacity of our storage infrastructure to meet our demanding throughput and processing requirements," said Helen Chen, network and computer scientist, Sandia National Laboratories. "Through its participation in StorCloud, StorageTek is helping to illustrate how supercomputing centers can apply the latest storage technology to counter their unique, real-world data storage and management challenges."
StorageTek will be exhibiting at booth #1423 and will host live demonstrations of its data storage and protection solutions on the exhibition floor at SC2004.
