Management Simulations, Inc. names nationwide competition winners

University of British Columbia and Drexel University Take Top Honors

NORTHFIELD, Ill., Nov. 17, 2004 -- Management Simulations Inc., the world leader in online business management simulation programs, has just concluded the annual Capstone and Foundation International Challenge, a worldwide, Internet-based contest for business students. The Capstone Challenge uses the Capstone simulation program and the Foundation Challenge uses the Foundation simulation program as the basis for the competition.

The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada took the top spot in the Capstone Challenge, amassing $171 million in profit for their virtual company. The UBC team included Mathew Gardner and Morgan Gough, both students of business professor, Dr. Peter Nemetz. Also included in the finals were students from St. Andrews Presbyterian University; University of Texas, San Antonio; Sung Kyan Kwan University, South Korea; St. Louis University and DePaul University.

Drexel University in Philadelphia landed the top spot in the Foundation Challenge with $136 million in profits. The Drexel team included Eric J. Zerphy, Ed O'Donnell, Kevin Shmihluk, and Kurt Kaminsky, all students of Professor Robert Laessig. Other finalists included teams from the University of Denver; University of Massachusetts; Dartmouth; Montana State University, Billings; and St. Andrews Presbyterian University.

Students managed competing, simulated companies, making all the management decisions that real companies make. The event included more than 500 schools worldwide. The competition for the 11 finalists took place over the course of two days and simulated managing a company for a business cycle of eight years.

"This Challenge simulates the pace and pressures of real business. It helps students master the multi-tasking, multi-impact cause and effect that takes place when managing a real company," said Dan Smith, president of MSI and a professor at DePaul University, Chicago. "We're proud of all our professors and students who participate in the Challenge. We know these students are being well prepared to excel in their business careers."
