SAIC's VACIS(R) cargo, vehicle and contraband inspection systems to be installed at Honduran Customs facilities

SAN DIEGO, Ca. and MCLEAN, Va., Feb. 3, 2005 -- Science Applications International Corporation's (SAIC) Security and Transportation Technology Business Unit today announced that its VACIS(R) cargo, vehicle and contraband inspection systems have been purchased by Camiones y Motores S.A. (CAMOSA) for operation at the Port of Puerto Cortes under contract to Honduran Customs. CAMOSA is acquiring two Mobile VACIS systems and one Portal VACIS system, and the order includes installation and on-site operator training.

SAIC's VACIS inspection systems are gamma ray-based systems designed for the non-intrusive inspection of the contents of trucks, containers and cargo.

The Mobile VACIS system is truck-mounted for rapid deployment as required and can inspect both stationary and moving vehicles and containers. Scanning can be performed in a forward or reverse direction, and a series of containers can be scanned in a single pass.

The Portal VACIS system is a fixed, high-throughput installation for a vehicle checkpoint and is particularly desirable in high traffic locales where lengthy inspection processes are impractical or undesirable. Its flexible design permits integration with other controls such as weigh-in-motion scales, vehicle optical character recognition identification systems, and other terminal operating systems.

"The goal of a 100 percent inspection rate at Puerto Cortes of both import and export traffic will be greatly assisted by the installation of these VACIS inspection systems," said Eduardo Atala, president of CAMOSA. "This busy port handles around 600,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, and we are proud to join Honduran Customs in this technologically progressive effort to combat terrorism, drug smuggling, illegal emigration and tax evasion."

More than 280 VACIS inspection systems, designed to assist customs, port, terminal and checkpoint authorities with manifest verification, tariff collection and the identification of contraband and other suspicious items, are deployed and operational globally.
