Experian establishes the world's most comprehensive consumer classification system

MOSAIC Global Now Available in China, USA, Europe and Asia Pacific

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., April 20, 2005 -- The world's wealthiest nations can be divided into ten different kinds of consumers according to Experian, the global information solutions company. The findings are the result of a complete rebuild of Experian's Mosaic Global -- the world's most comprehensive consumer classification system. Mosaic Global classifies more than a billion consumers worldwide covering a third of the surface area of the Earth and is available in all of the world's most prosperous economies including China, North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Mosaic Global reveals that the developed world can be classified into ten distinctive socio-economic groups. These include names such as Post Industrial Survivors, Low Income Elders and Sophisticated Singles.

Mosaic Global was first developed in the 1980s where it initially covered the UK, Netherlands and France. It was rebuilt in 1999 to cover ten international markets and now, following a complete new rebuild, encompasses 23 countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, USA, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, France, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Eire and the UK.

Mosaic Global has been made possible following a series of strategic international acquisitions and franchise arrangements by Experian's international Business Strategies operation. Five acquisitions have taken place in the last six months as the business has acquired market analysis and consumer research operations in China (Smartal Solutions), Finland (MarknadsAnalys OY), Norway (Segmenta), France (MMC) and Sweden (MarknadsAnalys AB).

"Our rebuild of Mosaic Global has identified ten socio-economic consumer types that exist across the developed world," said Marc Fanelli, vice president of Experian's Customer Insight group. "The percentage of each type in each country varies according to wealth, economic and social development, but the consumers in each type behave in a similar manner.

"Mosaic Global will enable international organizations to conduct more effective cross-border analysis, consumer research and target marketing in all the most prosperous regions of the global economy. The consistent consumer classification types will also facilitate a consistent and integrated approach when analyzing international consumer trends and markets or when conducting global marketing campaigns."

Mosaic Global - Groups and Types.

Mosaic Global has been built in each country using country-specific data sources and a range of typologies specific to the unique demographic and socio-economic composition of the respective indigenous population.

The ten consumer types identified in Mosaic Global are Rural Inheritance, Post Industrial Survivors, Low Income Elders, Metropolitan Strugglers, Hard Working Blue Collar, Routine Service Workers, Career and Family, Comfortable Retirement, Bourgeois Prosperity and Sophisticated Singles.

Within the Group classification, each country contains its own unique typology and these have country-specific names such as High Rise in Paris (France), Local Shop Keepers (Greece), Busy Bush and Beach (Australia), Green Idealists (Denmark), Expats and Super Rich (Hong Kong), Celtic Roots (Ireland), Suits and Gumboots (New Zealand) and Southern Blues (USA).
