from DSSResources.comU.S. Mayors to glimpse new security technology; TechAlt to demonstrate new interoperability solutions for first respondersCHICAGO, IL, June 9, 2005 -- While convening for the 73rd annual United States Conference of Mayors in Chicago through this weekend, the nation's municipal chief executives will get a first-hand introduction to a new technology solution that promises to improve communication and collaboration for America's first responders. TechAlt is at the forefront of the convergence of mission critical secure, multi-network mobile video, voice and data real time communications. The company delivers solutions including hardware, software and network components that allow voice systems, video cameras and other data communication equipment to become interoperable ("able to talk to each other") regardless of the current hardware maker's network or software. Using their existing communications technology, first responders at various different agencies (police, fire, and EMS at the local, state, and federal levels) can relay wireless voice, data, and video from one agency to another. The TechAlt technology allows multiple radios or wireless modems to exist in the same ruggedized enclosure and provide secure communications from one device to another. Responders and commanders have the advantage of seeing what is happening in real time. "A secure, reliable communications system is the number one tool for any public safety official to handle a daily emergency or a national crisis," said Jim Solomon, CEO of TechAlt. An enduring tragedy of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks was the inability of emergency workers to talk to each other, according to the 9/11 Commission which investigated the attacks that claimed some 3,300 lives. That communications trouble is blamed as a principal cause for the large numbers of New York City firefighters and police officers who died when the Trade Center buildings collapsed. "TechAlt's patented system utilizes redundant networks, automatically locating the strongest communications signal, enabling officers to maintain communications even if power and major infrastructures are destroyed," Solomon added. The company is currently providing this interoperable first responder system to Cook County, Ill. through the use of $75 million of Department of Homeland Security Urban Areas Security Initiative funding. During the USCM convention, which commences Friday, TechAlt will provide demonstrations on the convention premises. Asa Hutchinson, former Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security (BTS) at the federal Department of Homeland Security, will assist in the demonstration of interoperability between UHF and VHF radios, analog and cell phones along with live streaming video from remote locations in Chula Vista, CA and Washington, D.C. In addition to demonstrating its functionality, the company will also provide secure image and data demonstrations through a common network environment. "We are anxious to demonstrate how the work being done here in Illinois can be accomplished in any community across the country and how cities can best improve first responder situational awareness," Solomon said. "We are looking to bridge the gaps of disparate systems," he said. "We want to ensure that the right information gets to the right people, right away." Features of TechAlt's technology include: * Real time fixed and mobile video that can be shared between on-scene personnel, dispatch and command staff * Interoperable voice solutions that bridge disparate radio systems without purchasing new radios * Remote collaboration using text and image based messaging * Electronic access to database information and file reports from the field In January in Jacksonville, Fla., some 200 police, EMS and other public safety officials from several different North Florida jurisdictions used TechAlt technology at Super Bowl XXXIX events attended by an estimated 10,000 people daily. The technology was also been used by the U.S. Capitol Police in the coordination of some 7,000 officers and other public safety professionals deployed to Washington, D.C. for President Bush's inauguration festivities.
