This benchmark was run using the Informix Extended Parallel Server(TM) (XPS), version 8.31, the company's high-end data warehouse product, on a Sun Enterprise 10000 server, also known as Starfire, equipped with 64 466MHz UltraSPARC II CPUs, together with the 64-bit Solaris 7 operating environment. This combination delivered a composite query per hour rating of 6569 QphH@1000GB at a price/performance of $1159 QphH@1000GB. Informix has now published both clustered and single node TPC-H benchmarks with leading QphH@1000GB per CPU numbers. "The TPC-H continues to be one of the most reliable benchmarks of database performance in the decision support environment," said Jim Foy, vice president of Database Operations at Informix. "The ability of XPS to handle mixed loads of unpredictable queries clearly differentiates it from competing data warehouse and operational data store solutions," Foy added. Informix XPS is the high-end database server that provides customers with the best choice for business-critical, enterprise-wide data warehousing. Informix XPS enables fast data loading and comprehensive data management to support some of the world's largest and most heavily utilized business intelligence environments. Informix XPS is designed to impose "no ceilings" on enterprise data warehouse users. Based on a robust shared-nothing, parallel architecture, XPS can accommodate any size of database, any query, any schema design, and management from anywhere through a web browser. Informix XPS supports large data warehouses on both SMP and parallel architectures, such as Clusters, NUMA and MPP. Informix XPS 8.31 is expected to be available in February 2001. The hardware and operating system used in this benchmark are available now. The following table lists the benchmark configurations: Sun Enterprise 10000 CPU 64 Memory 64GB Disk 6.55TB Number of Nodes 1 Database Informix XPS 8.31.FD1 QphH@1000 6569.1 $/QphH@1000 $1159 The TPC-H (ad-hoc, decision support) benchmark represents environments where users don't know which queries will be executed against a database system. This means that no pre-knowledge of the queries can be built into the DBMS system and the query execution times can be very long. The real value of a decision support environment emerges when probing questions are asked and valuable discoveries are made, and the TPC-H measures this capability.
