Red Brick Decision Server 6.1; New Features Pave the Way for Improved
Decision Support

    MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2000--Informix(R) Software, the
database company, a subsidiary of Informix(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:IFMX), today announced Red
Brick(R) Decision Server(TM) 6.1, the latest version of the powerful Informix database engine for
data warehousing in Web or conventional decision-support environments.
    Enhancements to Informix Red Brick Decision Server 6.1 focus on meeting industry-specific
business-intelligence needs, including high-performance data loading, high-capacity and
high-performance query processing, and efficient management of very large databases.

meet the market needs for more powerful high-demand analysis of Web and legacy data," said Jim

    Red Brick Decision Server 6.1 improves access to information for business analysis and decision
making through a set of key features designed for easy implementation, low maintenance and high
performance. New features include:

 -- Support for Linux. Linux is the fastest growing server operating system. Like Red Brick, it is
    reliable and robust, has a low total cost of ownership, and appeals to traditional UNIX data
    centers. According to IDC, Linux is now the second most popular server operating system after
    Windows NT. Last year, sales of Linux grew at a rate of almost 90 percent. The IDC figures
    show Linux sales at about 1.35 million copies, giving it 25 percent of the market. 
 
 -- Automatic maintenance of aggregate tables for faster query response. With the Red Brick server,
    users have the option to enable automatic updates of aggregate tables when detail tables are
    updated. The Red Brick server also supports aggregate computation and management through
    the Red Brick Vista(TM) aggregate management system -- a comprehensive, server-integrated
    solution for aggregate computation and management. 

 -- Increased parallelism for optimized loading. Extensions were added to the Parallel Table
    Management Utility to enable faster loading of data with less data preparation. 

 -- Sampling for accelerated data analysis. This feature provides users the ability to efficiently
    produce approximate results based on sampled sets of data. This is especially useful for
    applications such as data mining. 

 -- Support for Java DataBase Connectivity (JDBC) 2.0. Support for JDBC 2.0 allows users to
    access information from their installed databases even if the information is stored on different
    database management systems. The previous version of Red Brick Decision Server supported
    JDBC 1.0. 

 -- Support for Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) 3.5. ODBC 3.5 is designed to enable a
    single application to access different database management systems with no modifications to its
    source code. Previous support was for ODBC 2.0.
