Informix Users Choose to Invest in Future by Migrating to The Oracle(R) Database More Than 1,000 Informix-to-Oracle Migration Tool Downloads Recorded; 20 Percent of Those Companies Now in the Oracle Sales Cycle REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Nov. 27, 2001 Oracle Corporation announced that a growing number of Informix customers are abandoning IBM Informix and turning to the Oracle(R) Database. Since Oracle announced a migration strategy for Informix users to move to Oracle9i Database earlier this summer, more than 1,000 downloads of its Informix-to-Oracle migration kits have been recorded on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). Of the 1,000 downloads, more than 20 percent of the companies are in the process of migrating to Oracle. These downloads signal the growing number of Informix customers actively pursuing a safe switch to the Oracle Database. Customers recently completing the switch include Capespan, FreeSoft Ltd., Gulf Insurance Company, Metro Foundation Supply, Tecsys, and Wisconsin Electric. "If we had remained with the mainframe, we would have been forced to embark on substantial upgrades, which did not make strategic business sense due to the rapid growth in Capespan's business," explained Leon Smith, database manager and project manager for Capespan. "Capespan was developing software internally to handle packet tracking and we had difficulty getting our Unisys 2200 mainframe to communicate with the new development environment." Customers converting from Informix to Oracle9i Database can preserve their IT investments with migration tools that help them move their applications more quickly and easily. The Oracle Migration Workbench simplifies the process of migrating data and applications in an integrated and visual environment. Rather than rewriting or manually converting the data or application from scratch, the Oracle Migration Workbench offers former IBM Informix customers a fast and cost-effective solution to migration. It also Web-enables the inherited legacy systems for increased functionality. To help ensure portability, all components of the Oracle Migration Workbench are written in Java. Gulf Insurance Company (GIC) migrated from Informix to the Oracle Database. "Because we have offices throughout Kuwait and our customers and partners demand 24 by 7 access to their insurance records and our insurance services, GIC required a technology partner with a secure, reliable Internet platform that could grow with our business. Oracle's integrated Internet platform proved to be ideal for our needs," said Osama Tyoan, information technology manager for Gulf Insurance Company. "Oracle9i is the security and reliability leader," said Jeremy Burton, senior vice president, product marketing for Oracle Corporation. "Because our database is unbreakable, Oracle9i is proving to be the choice for Informix customers concerned about the future of their databases."
