SUN RAISES THE BAR ON PORTAL COMPUTING WITH SUN[tm] ONE PORTAL SERVER; ANNOUNCES EXTENSIVE MULTI-PLATFORM SUPPORT

First to Deliver Fully Integrated Secure Identity Management and Support All Leading Application Servers and Operating Environments

SANTA CLARA, CA -- June 3, 2002 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc., a leader in systems and solutions that make the net work, today significantly changed the landscape of the portal market with the introduction of the Sun[tm] ONE Portal Server 6, the industry's first portal server solution to include fully integrated, secure identity management capabilities to streamline the security and management of enterprise portals with a single management console. The company also unveiled its product roadmap to support all three market leading Java[tm] 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE[tm]) application servers: BEA WebLogic, IBM Websphere and Sun ONE. Additionally, the Sun ONE Portal Server 6 will be deployed on Linux and Windows 2000 operating systems in addition to its reference platform, the Solaris[tm] operating environment. Sun also introduced extensive development tools and partner support that customers can use to quickly and efficiently deploy employee, customer and business partner portals.

The Sun ONE Portal Server 6 (formerly iPlanet[tm] Portal Server) is the only portal server both rated number one in market share by The Radicati Group ("Enterprise Portals Market Trends 2001-2005") and positioned in the leader quadrant in Gartner's Portal Product Magic Quadrant for two consecutive years ("Big Change Evident in 2H02 Horizontal Portal Product MQ," May, 2002). This, plus growing partner and customer momentum have positioned the new product as the industry's choice in delivering a portal platform with increased security, more efficient administration, richer portal experience and enhanced development tools for fast creation of Web services. The new Sun ONE Portal Server provides fully integrated secure identity management capabilities; Web single sign on, policy and access control, service provisioning and unified user management - via the embedded Sun ONE Identity Server - and provides all of the development tools and portlet ISV support required to quickly and efficiently deploy employee, customer and business partner portals.

"Providing identity management as a core capability of the Sun ONE Portal Server meets our customers' demand for portals that are secure, scalable and flexible," said Stuart Wells, senior vice president, Sun ONE Middleware Products, Sun Microsystems. "A Sun ONE Portal Server deployment can provide a substantial return on investment while also providing a future-proofed step towards the delivery of services on demand."

Sun Delivers Freedom of Choice to Protect IT Investments

The Sun ONE Portal Server 6 empowers customers with more choices and relief from vendor "lock in." Customers can be assured that when they chose the Sun ONE Portal Server they won't be locked into one vendor - today or tomorrow. Customers will be able to deploy the portal server on their choice of the three marketshare-leading application servers within heterogeneous environments to create and realize the TCO inherent in a consistent data center environment. The Java[tm] technology-based Sun ONE Portal enables customers to easily move applications, Web services and portals to other standards-based vendor platforms without the cost previously associated with such moves.

"Sun's commitment to open standards was key in our decision to choose Sun ONE to deliver Web services; today's announcement validates that we made the right decision," said Larry Singer, State Chief Information Officer and Executive Director of the Georgia Technology Authority. "While we chose a portal deployment based upon Sun ONE, we appreciate the fact that we aren't locked into Sun only; we are a 'future-proofed' shop."

Wide Industry Developer, System Integrator Support and Customer Adoption

More than 28 ISVs are working to incorporate the new version of the Sun ONE Portal Server into their respective solutions. These partners include: Actuate, Bowstreet, Broad Daylight, Citrix, D2K, Divine, Documentum, FatWire, Halcyon Monitoring Solutions, HNC (Blaze Advisor From HNC), Interwoven, Kivera, LogicLibrary, NewsEdge, Open Text, PiroNet NDH, Prophecy International, RSA Security, Screaming Media, Tarantella, T4 Consulting Group (T4CG), TogetherSoft, Vignette, Vuico (NTT SOFT), Wokup!, Xacct Technologies, Yahoo!, and YellowBrix.

Leading system integrators that today offer Sun ONE portal solutions such as Computer Sciences Corporation, EDS, AC Technology, ePresence, MG Solutions, Navidec, and S/scape can now develop portal solutions that provide their customers with the increased security, more efficient administration and richer portal experience of the Sun ONE Portal Server 6.

"We expect that the new development enhancements of the Sun ONE Portal Server 6 will help us rapidly create portals for our customers and help our customers accelerate their ROI in the deployment of their Internet strategies," said Norbert Nowicki, Senior Partner, Computer Sciences Corporation.

Sun is a leader in large-scale portal deployments with more than 385 customers including the American Hospital Association, AXA Financial, the State of Georgia and Workscape. The Sun ONE Portal Server 6 is a key component of the Sun[tm] Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) that presents Web services by aggregating and delivering personalized information, applications and services with the security and scalability required for large scale enterprise and service provider deployments.

Increased Security and More Efficient Administration through Identity Management-Enabled Portal Platform

"Portals can unite access to the heterogeneous computing platform deployed in large enterprises; however, delivering this unified platform requires secure identity management and multi-platform support," said Robert Perry, Senior Analyst for Yankee Group. "Integrating identity management into the Sun ONE Portal Server and providing broad application server and OS support will enable Sun to help its customers meet the challenges of enterprise computing."

The Sun ONE Portal Server can serve as the foundation for centralized policy, user management and single single-on capabilities. Portal implementations that don't include identity management frequently result in redundant user identity information, as well as limited policy and single sign-on capabilities. Since the Sun ONE Portal Server manages all of the identity information associated with each portal user's roles and access privileges, administrators only need to manage identity information once for multiple portal deployments, applications and initiatives. This can significantly increase the return on investment (ROI) of the deployment and reduce the amount of user management required resulting in a lower total cost of ownership (TCO).

The Sun ONE Portal 6 offers new standards-based, easy to use developer tools for fast creation of Web services, as well as richer user experience and capabilities.
