Call for Papers: Special issue of DSS Journal on Web-based Decision Support

Cedar Falls, IA, March 28, 2003 -- A special issue of the journal Decision Support Systems will focus on research on web-based decision support. The guest editors for the special issue are Hemant K. Bhargava, Pennsylvania State University, Daniel J. Power, University of Northern Iowa, and Daewon Sun, Pennsylvania State University . Please notify the guest editors of your plans to submit a paper by May 31, 2003. Final papers are due September 30, 2003.

The Editor-in-Chief of Decision Support Systems is A.B. Whinston, MSIS Department, University of Texas, Austin. The target audience of the journal is researchers and developers of DSS, researchers and practitioners in computer science, management and business administration, computer manufacturers, and software developers. The journal is published by Elsevier/NORTH-HOLLAND.

According to Bhargava, Power and Sun, the guest editors, "The World Wide Web has enabled a new way of thinking about systematic approaches to decision making, by allowing a distributed implementation of decision support technologies. Today, the various components related to decision support -- decision models, data and documents relevant to a decision, visualization technologies, data collection sensors, rules engines, etc. -- can be located on computers distributed over a global network, in a way that they can be seamlessly integrated and used by a decision maker. Such a distributed approach can be applied within organizations, where some decision support applications may be deployed over an intranet, as well as over the broader Internet where, for example, thousands of customers might be able to share the same data and algorithms for analyzing mortgage choices."

This special issue seeks articles related to research on web-based decision support, including articles that discuss:

  • case studies (e.g., lessons from a successful or failed implementation)
  • economics (e.g., pricing strategies, market structure)
  • empirical or experimental studies (e.g., cognitive characteristics of users of Web-based decision support)
  • implementation methodology (architecture, languages, etc.)
  • managerial questions (e.g., selling/buying decision technologies as services)
