XBRL-US Updates XML-Based Taxonomies Now Being Used by World's Leading Financial Services Institutions, Government Regulators and Software Developers

SEATTLE, WA, Nov. 14, 2003 -- XBRL-US announced today that the use of XBRL is gaining momentum in the US and abroad as membership expands to more than 200 of the world's leading technology, accounting and government service companies. Approximately 300 attendees from 20 countries attended last week's 8th XBRL International Conference in Seattle. During the conference, XBRL-US released an updated GAAP Commercial and Industrial (US-GAAP-CI) taxonomy as well as a new GAAP Banking and Savings Institution (US-GAAP-BASI) taxonomy. XBRL taxonomies are a description and classification system for the contents of financial statements and other business reporting documents used by companies and organizations within the financial information supply chain to exchange financial information across all software formats. US companies can now use XBRL as they move forward with implementation to obtain straight-through reporting efficiencies. Conference speakers included keynote speaker David Odell, CFO of Hyperion Solutions, Susan Strausberg, President and CEO of Edgar Online and Tim Bray, co-author of XML.

The release of the updated US GAAP Commercial and Industrial taxonomy will now allow approximately 80% of US public companies to use XBRL to report financial statement information," said Campbell Pryde, Chair of the XBRL US Domain Committee. "XBRL-US is also pleased to announce the US GAAP Banking and Savings Institution taxonomy. This is the first industry extension of the US GAAP Commercial and Industrial taxonomy that allows banks and savings institutions to use XBRL to tag their financial statements. The US Domain group is also pleased to announce that work is underway to build both insurance and brokerage extensions so these additional industry sectors can report their financial statements in XBRL."

In other news at the conference, Microsoft's Chris Kurt, standards diplomat for Web Services, demonstrated how EDGAR Online, a financial information company specializing in making complex regulatory reporting by public companies actionable and easy to use, would deliver financial information in XBRL format to Microsoft Office 2003 applications using the Microsoft Office Solution Accelerator for XBRL. Kurt showed how XBRL will enable investors and financial analysts to analyze company and industry financial performance with unprecedented ease and accuracy. Garry Lowenthal, chairman of the Financial Executive International's Committee on Finance and Information Technology said, "The adoption of XBRL promises to help companies make faster and better decisions and improve financial transparency, which ultimately boosts investor confidence. Additionally, widespread adoption of XBRL will permit financial analysts, investors, accountants, government agencies, internal users, and other interested parties to access, compare, and analyze data in ways that currently are not practical or even possible." Financial Executive International is the voice of corporate finance and the professional association of choice for senior-level financial executives worldwide.

"We're pleased to see the high level of involvement with the XBRL initiative from market leaders in the financial services, software, government and accounting sectors," said Michelle Horowitz, Chair of XBRL US Adoption Committee and Vice President, Content Development, PR Newswire. "The release of the XBRL taxonomies means that companies can now begin leveraging XBRL and more efficiently prepare, analyze and distribute financial information to investors, analysts and other stakeholders. Financial services companies and regulators are anticipated to quickly adopt XBRL to more effectively meet their lending and regulatory processing needs."

In other adoption news, both KPMG LLP and Ernst & Young LLP announced the placement of one its professionals to an inaugural XBRL fellowship. KPMG LLP will place Jennifer Moriarty, an auditor with the firm's financial services practice in New York at the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and Ernst & Young LLP will place Josef MacDonald, manager, National Assurance & Advisory Services, Ernst & Young, New Zealand to the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation (IASC Foundation).
