Intergraph Education Symposium Demonstrates Innovative Geospatial Research and Teaching Among Academic Community

Two education visionaries, Professors Goodchild and Salvemini, to speak at symposium

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 19, 2004 - Intergraph Mapping and Geospatial Solutions and the Intergraph GeoSpatial Users Community (IGUC) today announced an Intergraph Education Symposium to be held in conjunction with GeoSpatial World 2004, the IGUC annual international training and management conference, May 12-14, in Miami Beach, Fla., USA. The symposium, targeted at educators and academic researchers in grades K-12 and undergraduate and post-graduate institutions, will present innovative geospatial research and teaching to benefit in the application of geospatial solutions within educational curricula. In addition, the symposium will provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of Intergraph's education programs and ways in which education institutions can benefit from participating in the programs.

The symposium will feature presentations on mobile education, including the EAST Initiative Virtual Camp, which complements traditional instructor-led training and allows students to work at their own pace; the Intergraph Best Practices Awards winners' presentations; and an open floor for the IGUC Education Network session. In addition, the event will incorporate two keynote addresses by world-renowned professors Dr. Michael Goodchild, member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada, and Professor of Geography, University of California, Santa Barbara; and Mauro Salvemini, President of the Association of Geographical Information Laboratories Europe (AGILE), and Professor, University of Rome La Sapienza, College of Architecture. Drawing upon his many diverse international successes, Goodchild will present Educating the Next Generation of Geospatial Professionals, outlining the challenges and opportunities ahead for geospatial teaching and education. Salvemini will showcase leading-edge research within the AGILE group and provide his vision of the future direction of research within the geospatial arena during the keynote address, Geospatial Research: Moving Forward in the 21st Century.
