8/22/00 - Cognos Bolsters Business-Intelligence Tools

 
Aug 21, 2000 (Tech Web - CMP via COMTEX) -- Cognos Inc. is bolstering its data-visualization and data-mart software with the release of its Cognos Visualizer
business-intelligence tool and a new version of its DecisionStream ETL toolset for building data marts. 

Cognos Visualizer 1.5 will offer enhanced graphics and a greater selection of charts and maps. The product is also more tightly linked with Cognos' portal
technology and balanced scorecard business performance-measurement software. 

"We're seeing Cognos tighten the integration between the visualization tool and the underpinning analytical technologies, which is very important," Aberdeen
Group analyst Bob Moran says. 

DecisionStream anchors Cognos' business-intelligence suite by giving users tools to build data marts that can be accessed with Cognos' Impromptu, PowerPlay,
and other business-intelligence applications. Cognos says DecisionStream 6.5 delivers improved data-transformation capabilities and automated data dimension
management, and is more tightly integrated with Cognos' Architect data modeling and metadata management software. 

Eaton Corp.'s Cutler-Hammer unit, a manufacturer of power distribution and motor-control equipment, uses DecisionStream to assemble data marts for financial
management, international market share analysis, and product price analysis. "In the past, we were making a lot of decisions by gut feel," says Ray Huber,
Cutler-Hammer's global sales and marketing systems manager. "Now we're giving managers the information they need to make decisions." Data warehouse
project leader Marty Boretzky says the new release will be easier to use and make it easier to monitor changes in data dimensions. 

DecisionStream 6.5 will be available this week for $65,000; Visualizer 1.5 is scheduled to ship in late September for $795.
