Winter Corporation Research Names Teradata World's Leading Large-Scale Data Warehouse for Decision Support

Teradata maintains leadership role for the fourth consecutive time,
enabling customers to be more profitable by leveraging their data warehouse

DAYTON, Ohio August 1, 2002 - Teradata, a division of NCR Corporation, announced that the recently-released report from the Winter Corporation's Database Scalability Program named the Teradata® database as the leading database for large-scale data warehousing for the fourth consecutive time.

"Once again, the data conclusively shows that the Teradata database is the product of choice when an extremely large and heavily used data warehouse is needed," said Richard Winter, president of Winter Corporation. "Because of the scalability and stability of the product, Teradata customers can push the envelope with confidence as they leverage their data warehouse to gain corporate advantage."

The Winter Database Scalability program, now in its sixth year, identifies and examines issues related to scalability and explores other technical and business attributes of the world's largest database systems. The program also analyzes the critical relationship between electronic business and large database technology. The research for the current report was conducted during 2001, and includes responses from participants in over 30 countries worldwide.

The key findings from the research indicate:

  • Teradata manages more data and processes more concurrent queries than any other decision support database, with the peak workload of 1,200 concurrent queries, four times that of the nearest competitor.
  • Teradata leads all other vendors in forecasted database growth through 2004, with the average size of the customer's database anticipated to double in size to an unparalleled 7.6 terabytes of data.
  • In all categories in which they could participate (i.e, excluding Windows NT categories), Teradata users ranked first, ahead of all commercial, non-proprietary users. The "Top Ten" lists of award-winning Teradata customers include: SBC, 3M, FedEx, Albacom, Norfolk Southern, Office Depot, AT&T, Casino and Union Pacific.
