EMC positioned in the "Leaders" quadrant in Gartner Enterprise Content Management Magic Quadrant report

HOPKINTON, Mass., Nov. 11, 2005 -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today announced that it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the "Leaders" quadrant in the "Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Content Management, 2005"(1) report. Gartner Inc.'s Magic Quadrant positioned EMC as an enterprise content management (ECM) leader based on the completeness of its vision and ability to execute that vision. Gartner describes companies listed in the "Leaders" quadrant as performing well today, having a clear vision of market direction and actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

The report identified today's ECM suites as encompassing document management, Web content management, records management, document capture and document imaging, document-centric collaboration and workflow. According to Gartner, "The market and client requirements are evolving rapidly and vendors are adding additional capabilities that can either be included as extended ECM suite functionality or interoperate with the ECM suite. These components include: integrated document archive and retrieval systems for archiving fixed content including images and printstream reports; E-forms for capturing and exchanging electronic content; Digital asset management for storing and managing rich media content; and e-mail archiving and e-mail management for retaining electronic communications in support of compliance."

"EMC is positioned furthest at the top of the 'Leaders' quadrant in the Gartner ECM Magic Quadrant," said Dave DeWalt, President, EMC Software Group. "As a market leader, we continue to extend our capabilities beyond traditional ECM and into technology areas that complement our current offerings, including deeper support for imaging and enterprise report management, and a growing suite of solutions to address specific business problems. We have already delivered a virtual repository offering that enables content mining across many content sources, and we continue to offer greater support for other forms of semi-structured and unstructured information types such as e-mail. This is all with an eye to delivering the most value to customers -- consistent capture, classification, management, delivery, retention, search and access for all content -- while still giving them flexibility in options."

The EMC Documentum enterprise content management family of software products is based on a unified platform that enables customers to improve productivity, lower cost, mitigate risks and ensure compliance by optimizing work processes and leveraging their information assets. Customers can create, manage, deliver and archive information that drives their business, from documents and discussions to e-mail, Web pages, images, XML, reports, records, rich media and application data. Announced in March 2005, the EMC Documentum 5.3 platform is the world's first major ECM offering based on a completely unified architecture. With Documentum 5.3, customers can implement a completely unified content stack that includes process and repository services to provide increased functionality and flexibility in collaboration, automation and security. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the "Leaders" quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise's requirements.
